Description

Jobs in this family require professional training in building design and redesign. Positions develop the concepts for structures and turn concepts into images and plans. Positions may be involved in all phases of a construction or refit project, from the initial discussion with the client through the final delivery of the completed structure ensuring compliance with the applicable building codes, zoning laws, fire regulations, and other ordinances, such as those requiring easy access by people who are disabled.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Review and inspect facilities, drawings, campuses, and buildings.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes.
  • Review or assist with the review of construction documents from an architectural/design perspective.
  • Manage projects including developing cost estimates, preparing plans and specifications, and overseeing job sites.

Positions allocated to this series may perform the duties described, or specialize in areas of architecture and design. The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from basic building design to complex architectural drawings and specifications.

Designer

A position at this level prepares and/or reviews architectural designs and drawings and interior plans and specifications. A designer conducts reviews and inspects drawings, buildings and facilities to ensure compliance with applicable codes. Employees in this position also assist in project planning and review of construction documents from a design perspective.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Skill in designing and communicating with clients and builders. Skill using Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software. Ability to travel, operate a motor vehicle, and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Typical qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree and 0-1 year of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Architect

A position at this level is a licensed professional Architect responsible for preparing and/or reviewing complex architectural designs, drawings, and specifications and provides construction management oversight. An Architect conducts inspections and reviews of complex drawings and buildings and facilities to ensure compliance with applicable codes. Reviews construction documents from an architectural perspective and participates in preparing building/construction Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and identifying/monitoring capital outlays.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of governmental capital expenditure processes. Ability to prepare RFP’s.

Typical qualifications

Licensed as an Architect and 3 or more years of experience as a practicing Architect.
