Professional Land Surveying

Jobs in this family provide land surveying services requiring certification and/or licensure to fulfill land surveying functions in compliance with State statute requirements.

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Gather, analyze, and compile data for legal documentation.
  • Create maps and map exhibits.
  • Measure distances and angles between points to identify areas and elevation.
  • Use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) or similar software.

The work assigned to positions ranges from training assignments to professional land surveying supervision and project management responsibilities.

Land Surveyor-In-Training

Land Surveyor-In-Training positions are accountable for data collection, routine data analysis (such as spatial data), quantity estimating, and compilation of data for legal documents. Incumbents create basic maps and prepare map exhibits. Surveying work is performed under the direction of a Licensed Land Surveyor and/or supervisor. Typically, tasks are well-defined using templates and models.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of mathematical principles. Ability to negotiate a variety of terrain. Ability to be detail oriented and a good communicator.

Typical qualifications

Certified as a Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT).

Land Surveyor

Land Surveyor positions are professionals accountable for data collection, data analysis (such as spatial data), quantity estimating, and the compilation of data for legal documents. Incumbents create basic to moderately complex maps and prepare map exhibits. Surveying work conducted at this level is well defined with templates, precedents, and models. Assigned work is performed under the direction of a higher-level professional individual contributor and/or supervisor. May supervise, provide guidance, and mentor lower-level individual contributors.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Ability to provide guidance and mentorship to staff.

Typical qualifications

Licensed as a Land Surveyor.

Land Survey Supervisor

This is the first level of supervision providing administrative and technical leadership to a team of professional and/or vocational individual contributor surveying staff. Serves as a technical resource. The focus of this position is on supervision, resource management, and accountability for the results of the team’s work outcomes. Ensures integration with other teams and ensures work is conducted in accordance with overall management objectives. Plans and directs work, and reviews and reports on progress and outcomes of work. May also perform surveying work at a high professional level and serve as project manager when designated for that role.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of project management. Skill in providing technical guidance and direction to staff. Ability to manage staff resources.

Typical qualifications

Licensed as a Land Surveyor and 2-6 years of progressive relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Land Survey Manager

Positions at this level are accountable for planning, organizing, budgeting, and allocating resources and may serve as project manager. The primary focus of a position at this level is on the management of other managerial and/or supervisory staff, which includes recruitment, training, development, and performance management. Responsible for the overall results of the assigned organizational units. Develops plans for the assigned organizational units, identifies objectives, and delegates authority as needed to the relevant teams. Identifies, allocates, reorganizes, and provides necessary resources to achieve organizational objectives.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels:  Knowledge of management and budget process. Skill in managing projects.

Typical qualifications

Licensed as a Land Surveyor, and 6 or more years of experience in surveying, and experience in managing others in a supervisory/managerial role. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
