Jobs in this family manage, supervise, and actively participate in geologic activities and projects that impact environmental or natural resource programs and projects. Jobs are focused on the protection of Missouri’s environment and natural resources and preparing technical documents.
 

Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Conduct field investigations and collect data.
  • Employ geologic principles to define problems, conduct research, analyze data and potential solutions, and provide geologic interpretations that affect public health, safety, and welfare.
  • Prepare/review technical documents.
  • Sign and seal geologic reports prepared by self or staff.
  • Perform statistical analyses.
  • Identify problem areas and issues concerning the quality of the state’s natural resources.
  • Contribute to developing solutions.
  • The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from standard geologic assignments to specialized program management.

Associate Geologist

This is a professional position that performs work involving various phases and sub-disciplines of geology. Work involves the evaluation, protection, and promotion of natural resources; conducting geologic field investigations/examinations; providing technical support; identifying potential problem areas/issues; and contributing to developing solutions. At this level, work performed may be under the full professional responsibility and oversight of a supervising registered professional geologist in responsible charge.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of current principles, practices, policies, procedures, minimum standards, and regulations related to geology. Ability to conduct geologic investigations and prepare corresponding reports.

Typical qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and 0-3 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Geologist

This is a seasoned professional position that plans, organizes, and directs projects and investigations in various phases and sub-disciplines of geology and provides geologic interpretations that affect public health, safety, and welfare. Projects include highly complex investigations in which a variety of geologic/geotechnical conditions may be encountered. Positions will also review reports prepared by others, sign and seal geologic reports or portions of reports, and may mentor/oversee work of other geologists and geologist-registrants in-training. May represent the division/department in meetings and hearings, provide expert testimony, prepare and monitor grants or work plans, and/or prepare reports, maps, graphs, and tables on the findings and results of geologic investigations and special studies.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of principles and practices of geology as applied to groundwater resources, mineral resources, engineering geology, environmental geology, geographic information system development, and related matters. Knowledge of computer applications and software used in geologic mapping, investigations, and analysis. Ability to apply relevant statistical methods to the interpretation and utilization of gathered data. Ability to discern when legal assistance is required in conducting inspections and investigations.

Licensure as a Geologist registered in the State of Missouri.

Geologist Supervisor

This is a supervisory position accountable for operational oversight of professional teams and technical experts in geoscience disciplines, that serves as the registered geologist in responsible charge. Focus is on the design, planning, implementation, and management of a statewide program, requiring significant multi-disciplinary coordination. Employees are considered to be statewide experts in their field; assignments are complex due to the variables involved requiring the development of unique solutions to environmental/natural resource/geologic problems. Technical documents are prepared/reviewed and professionally sealed to ensure reliability when having a possible impact upon public health, safety, and welfare. Duties will also include sharing information and influencing issues at the national level and writing and evaluating legislation. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning, and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, mentoring, and progressive discipline.

In addition to those identified at the previous level: Skill in the interpretation of legislative/regulatory processes and applicable laws and rules. Ability to recommend budget items and work within budget constraints. Ability to direct, supervise, and evaluate the work of others. Ability to mentor, coach, develop skills, and oversee technical geoscience work of staff. Ability to manage multiple work activities.

Licensure as a Geologist registered in the State of Missouri and 4-6 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Geologist Manager

This is a managerial position accountable for providing oversight of a geologic program or programs and overseeing the work of professional employees. Work at this level is primarily focused on supervision and program implementation, requiring thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations and the ability to address program related operations issues. Employees at this level may also provide direction, guidance, and mentorship to professional employees.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Skill in understanding internal and external politics that impact the work of the organization. Ability to oversee projects from inception to completion within specified timeframes and budgetary restraints. 

Typical qualifications

Licensure as a Geologist registered in the State of Missouri and 6 or more years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)
