Typical functions

The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Perform inspections and repairs.
  • Diagnose electrical/mechanical problems.
  • Identify repair procedures.
  • Inspect parts for defects and replace them.

The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from performing inspections and repairs to overseeing aircraft maintenance operations.

Aircraft Mechanic

This is a vocational-level position responsible for performing inspections, repairs, and scheduled maintenance of aircraft. Employees are accountable for diagnosing electrical and mechanical problems and identifying repair procedures; and examining parts for defects and replacing them with new ones.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of the methods, tools, and practices used in a specialized aircraft maintenance area. Knowledge of aircraft schematics, properties of airframe materials, and electrical systems. Knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and regulations. Ability to read gauges, and understand instrumentation and diagnostic tools. Ability to use diagnostic and other mechanical tools used in repairing aircraft.

Typical qualifications

1-3 years of relevant experience. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Senior Aircraft Mechanic

This is an advanced level position which oversees day-to-day aircraft maintenance operations.  Employees at this level function as a lead worker and are accountable for planning and assigning work, providing technical advice and guidance on appropriate course of action, and ensuring completion of assignments in accordance with policies and procedures.  Additionally, employees are responsible for planning and overseeing the implementation of equipment replacement schedules and purchasing and/or replacement of testing or repair equipment. 

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Ability to determine airworthiness of aircrafts and take appropriate actions. Skill in diagnosing and defining maintenance issues. Ability to plan, organize, and carry out assignments effectively. Ability to train, mentor, coach, and develop skills of staff. Ability to interpret and apply Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and regulations.
