Firefighting

This is a first-level firefighting position that serves as a member of a team or crew to suppress fires, administer emergency medical assistance (at a first level of aid), respond to hazardous materials incidents, and assist with aircraft/vehicle accidents and other emergency situations. At this level, employees follow written policies and procedures, and specific instruction of team leaders. A key focus at this level is training: participating in drills, demonstrations, and classroom and practical training on rescue techniques, hazardous material response, first aid, fire prevention, fire safety inspections, and the use of various suppressants, tools, and equipment.   

This is a second-level firefighting position accountable for serving as a crew chief assigned to operate a specific firefighting apparatus at the scene of aircraft, vehicle, and structural fires. At this level, employees assign vehicles and equipment to the most advantageous position and direct forcible entry into a structure or aircraft.

This is a supervisory position accountable for the direction of fire, rescue, and medical treatment services at an assigned location. Work involves planning and directing the operations of multiple firefighting crews assigned to a shift. Employee supervision includes hire recommendations, training, planning and assigning work, performance assessment, coaching, and progressive discipline. Additional duties include coordinating the response to fire alarms and emergency medical service (EMS), incidents to contain or extinguish fire, and emergency medical activities.

This is a managerial firefighting position accountable for directing fire, rescue, and medical treatment services operations. Work involves planning and directing the operations of multiple shifts of firefighting crews at an assigned location. At this level, an employee will assist the Fire Chief with the fire department’s planning and administrative functions. Additional duties include directing the response to fire alarms and emergency medical service (EMS), incidents to contain or extinguish fires, and emergency medical activities; serves as incident commander.
