The work assigned to positions in this series ranges from serving as a uniformed member of a team responsible for conducting military funeral honors ceremonies to supervisory and administrative work in the direction of Military Funeral Honors Program objectives.

Military Funeral Honors Team Member

These positions serve as uniformed members of a specialized team responsible for conducting military funeral honors ceremonies at the burial sites of deceased veterans. At this level, positions are accountable for performance of any assigned team position, including acting team leader, necessary for the successful completion of an honors ceremony; frequent travel within an assigned geographic area; operation, maintenance, and safeguarding of military weapons; and preparation of various reports.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

Knowledge of applicable military regulations, policies, and directives for military funeral honors ceremonies. Skill in handling and using firearms. Ability to participate in regular fitness and drill and ceremony training exercises. Ability to work outdoors, in extreme weather conditions and irregular hours. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and maintain a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Typical qualifications

1 year of U.S. Military experience and graduation from a U.S. Military Advanced Individual Training (AIT) course or equivalent. (Substitutions may be allowed.)

Military Funeral Honors Supervisor

This is a supervisory position accountable for supervisory work involving coordination of and participation in military funeral honors ceremonies, leadership of a specialized team of subordinates, coordination with the area superiors and/or funeral directors, and completion of general administrative work related to his/her respective team. Work also involves preparing and conducting drill and ceremony training programs for subordinates, volunteer National Guard units, and veterans’ organizations.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous level: Knowledge of principles and techniques of effective supervision and training. Ability to lead a specialized team and maintain a military atmosphere. Ability to prepare and present training and instructional information to subordinates, augmentee personnel, and veterans’ organizations.

Typical qualifications

3 or more years of U.S. Military experience in a leadership position.

Military Funeral Honors Manager

This is a managerial position accountable for the direction of multiple specialized teams responsible for providing funeral honors ceremonies for deceased veterans. At this level, an employee will be accountable for making independent decisions concerning the procedures or means required to accomplish area program goals; providing administrative and logistical guidance to area employees to support program objectives; and making presentations to local government and civic organizations regarding the Military Funeral Honors Program. In addition, employees will be accountable for preparing and managing the area’s operating budget and making overall budget recommendations to the program director.

Knowledge, skills & abilities

In addition to those identified in the previous levels: Knowledge of personnel management, preparation and presentation of training programs, and the principles of staff development. Knowledge of business and office management practices, financial record keeping and budget preparation.

Typical qualifications

4 or more years of related experience, including experience in a leadership role.
